Week 5

Grief, Loss, Family and Life Experiences

During Week 5, I participated in conversations that deepened my understanding of the emotional experiences some residents may carry, including grief, loss, changing family relationships and significant life events.

Practice Reflection

Presence, Empathy and Emotional Safety

I learned that sensitive social work engagement is not always about offering advice or finding an immediate solution. Sometimes, meaningful support begins by remaining present, listening with empathy and allowing a person to share their experiences at their own pace.

This week also strengthened my awareness of emotional safety. Residents should maintain control over what they choose to discuss, and their boundaries must be respected without pressure. These experiences helped me recognise not only the difficulties people may face, but also the strength and resilience they have developed throughout their lives.
