My Social Work Placement Journey

My first social work placement at Bupa Aged Care Ashbury has given me the opportunity to develop my understanding of social work practice within residential aged care. Throughout the placement, I am strengthening my communication, relationship-building, reflective practice and professional skills while learning from residents, staff, supervision and everyday interactions.

Week 1 — Beginning the Journey

I also began introducing myself and developing respectful professional relationships with residents and staff.

Social Work Connection

During the week, I developed an initial understanding of how social work values can guide practice in aged care. I observed the importance of treating every resident with dignity, respecting individual choices and communicating with patience and empathy.

Person-centred practice, professional identity, ethical practice, dignity, confidentiality and multidisciplinary teamwork form the core values underpinning my ongoing field placement practice.

I also learned how social work contributes to residents’ emotional and social wellbeing while working alongside other professionals, recognising the importance of teamwork, professional boundaries, confidentiality and supervision within my student placement role.
